FUEL PSI. CUMMINS 5.9 LIFT PUMP

Operating pressure for the fuel system of a 5.9 Cummins engine is critical. The lack or decrease in fuel pressure supplied to the injection pump is one of the most common reasons for injection pump failure. The system depends on fuel flow to cool and lubricate the high tolerance parts that make the pump work when it is starved for flow the pump overheats and fails. Unfortunately, the injection pump will continue to operate without the lift pump for a time. As the psi from the lift pump decreases the performance and life of the injection pump decreases as well, by the time symptoms occur usually it is too late and both the lift pump and the injection pump are damaged. The only sure way to prevent this is know the psi of the lift pump. This is why at SOS we recommend a fuel system check regularly to know how your lift pump is operating and catch any decrease in psi before it is to the point of injection pump damage. Stop in or call for an appointment today and let the professionals at SOS help prevent unnecessary and costly repairs.
